TPO 22- Q1
In this set of materials, the reading states that there are severe critics over the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel for gasoline. However, the lecturer believes that one of the reasons the reading provided is not convincing, thus he gives some evidence to refute each of the author's reasons.
First of all, it is mentioned in the passage that using ethanol fuel has nothing to do with the reduction of the most severe environmental crisis: global warming. On the contrary, the lecturer states that using ethanol fuel will not make an increase in global warming. he explains that burning ethanol will release CO2 either, while the source of ethanol is related to corn. He continues to explain that by growing plants, co2 production would decrease, therefore the process of ethanol production contracts with the co2 production.
Furthermore, the author of the reading declares that the enormous production of ethanol from plant sources decreases the number of these plant for other purposes. On the contrary, the lecturer states that the cell wall of these plant is consist of cellulose which is not eaten by animals. Moreover, ethanols production is mainly focused on these components, so the available amount of food will not be reduced for animals.
Finally, the passage claims that the cost of ethanol production is high and it can not compete with gasoline price. To argue with this statement, the speaker asserts that the price of ethanol will compete with price gasoline, and it does not always need the support of the government. He explains that increasing the production rate leads to a drop in cost, thus it will be more available in the future. He also anticipates that the production rate will be 3 fold of today's rate, therefore its cost will be reduced by 40%.
