“Over the past year, our late night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of local and weather news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news programs have just cancelled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.”
The business manager is primarily concerned with the drop in revenues after they devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. He intends to increase revenues by restoring the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. His argument is supported by the claim that during this period, viewers have complained about the decrease in station’s coverage of local and weather news. He also states the local businesses which previously used to advertise during their late-night news programs have canceled their contracts.
The business manager states that he has received complaints from viewers who were concerned with the station’s coverage of local and weather news. Irate viewers tend to be more vocal about their disapproving views than people who appreciate the change of devoting more time to national news. People are more likely to send a mail if they are unhappy about a particular product than if they are satisfied with it. Hence, the business manager may be neglecting thousands of people who have welcomed the change and may be giving undue attention to a few people who have instead been more vocal about their disdain. He needs to carry out a survey to get a more structured view of the consequences of the change.
The business manager hasn’t mentioned anything about the decline in viewership of the program. It might be the case that the viewership of the program may have increased significantly because more people may have preferred national news over weather and local news. This means that it hasn’t been proven that the program has become less popular. Thus, restoring the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level may be disastrous for the program.
It has also been stated that there has been a drop in local businesses willing to advertise on the news program. Though, local businesses haven’t stated that they have taken this measure on account of the changed time devotion on the program. There might be some other reason as to why they have taken this step. The businesses might have customers in a particular season which is the case in businesses such as winter wear clothing.
Thus, there is a need to know whether the viewership has increased or declined to take the mentioned steps. We also need to know the overall satisfaction level of viewers and not base our decision on complaints received from a few irate customers.
