From the reading we have learned about weapon called a “burning mirror”, which is made of polished copper sheet curved in parabolic shape to cause fire with the power of sun lights. The idea of this weapon claims to be impossible to release, however, the professor disapproves this statement.
First of all, the passage states that the ancient Greeks were not technically advanced enough to create a large copper mirror in parabolic shape. But according to the professor’s speech, it was not necessary to create the only one huge copper sheet. The more possible mean to activate the weapon is to make 100 small copper sheets and then just to form a required shape to make the weapon enable to be used.
Second of all, the article says that according to the experiment it would take too much time to burn the wooden complex of ships using “burning mirror”. Moreover, the object has to be unmoving. That’s why the use of this weapon is not practical. Nevertheless, the professor claims that the core of the weapon was not a wooden part of ships, but its sticky pitch, which inflames in seconds, although the ship may move.
Finally, the reading claims that the use of “burning mirror” was just simply less effective than flaming arrows, which could expeditiously take the ship on fire. But the professor suggests that ancient Greeks used the combo of two weapons together. It not only made enemies confused by making them think that they deal with “mirrors” only, it allowed to cover the weapon with copper sheets and then enabled to use effectively as well.
