The reading passage states three hypotheses for the decline of yellow cedar population, whereas the lecture points out that these explanations are not adequate.
Firstly, the author insists that insect parasites, especially the cedar bark beetles which their lava will eat the wood of yellow cedar, can lead to the decline of yellow cedar. And there has been recorded instances that insect caused the death of yellow cedars. The professor, however, argues that this kind of cedar is much more resist to insects than other species because its bark and leaves can secrete chemical which is fatal to insects. In this way, the insect cannot be the fundamental cause.
Secondly, the reading says that brown bear will claw the cedars to get their barks that contain high sugar content, which can be a major blame for the decline of yellow cedars. In contrast, the speaker reckons that the population of cedars are reducing across the America from the mainland to the coast island. And the on the island there are no bears, therefore, the bears are not responsible for the decline of cedars.
Lastly, the author deems that the gradual change of climate may affect their root systems and the growing roots can be damage by cold winter. As a result, the health of the whole tree are undermined. On the contrary, the professor rebuts the assertion by saying that there are more trees died in low elevation where is warmer than the high elevation. If the frozen root is the reason, there should be more trees died in high elevation. So the the climate change may make the root system more sensitive, but it is not the cause.
