The Reading and the lecture are both about a new full-length portrait which has come out and it is believed that is the English novelist Jane Austen –a non already recognized woman- who has been sketched by her sister. The author thinks that there are some good reasons to call the painting as Jane Austen because of its resemblances. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that calling the painting Jane A. is questionable because the links are not much convincing.
First, the author explains that the family Austen after Jane’s death gave the acceptance to portray their died daughter. It is mentioned that the Austen family strongly thought that Jane is the girl in the painting. However, the professor argues that as Jane had been died for 70 years how the someone would paint Jane.
Second, the author states that Jane’s face resembles so much the one in the painting, moreover, the painting has many important details which were of the young Jane. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument. He highlights that the person in the painting could be Jane’s relative and therefore, he would have the same features as jane or the closest ones.
Finally, the author contends that some have recognized teenager Jane painted in Ozias’ paintings because he was hired by the family Austen he could have portrayed Jane as well. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the black Canvas made by Ozias was not sold in London where Jane lived and at that time Jane was 74 much older than the portrayed woman.
