In this set of material, the passage and the lecture offer two opposing points of view about the Cedar declination. While the passage lists three hypotheses which, can be responsible for cedar declination, the lecture argues that these hypotheses are not accurate and he points out that the reason for this declination is still unknown.
First, the passage explains one hypothesis in which, insect parasites are responsible for the damage. the article argues that cedar bark beetles are known to attack cedar trees and their larvae eat the wood. On the other hand, the lecture declares that due to the fact that these trees are poisoned, the beetles cannot affect them. Actually, these insects attack the trees which, are already damaged, so as a result, they can not be considered as the fundamental cause.
In addition, the passage suggests another hypothesis, it argues that the bears can consider as the cause of cedar declination. The passage states that bears sometimes claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark. In contradict to this, lecture points out that the declination is happening in places where, there is no bear, like islands. This indicates that the bears could not be the principal cause.
Finally, the author asserts that gradual changes in climate can be the major cause of this declination. Verse vice, the speaker states that although climate changing makes the trees more sensitive, due to the fact that this declination is more feasible in low elevation areas in which, the climate is more temperate, the coldness cannot be the reason of cedar declination.
