Summarize the points in the lecture being sure to explain how they oppose the points in the reading passage
The author of the reading passage discusses altruism in animals and humans which is not being selfish and helping others. The lecturer refutes the points made in the reading passage and supports her points by suitable explanations.
Firstly the reading passage discusses altruism in an animal specie Meerkat, in which an individual Meerkat acts as a sentinal ie standing guard and looking out for predators while other group hunts for food or eat the obtained food. If a predator is seen it alerts the group by giving an alarm cry so that other group can run and seek shelter and putting itself in grave danger. The Lecturer is not convinced with the reading passage and refutes by stating following points. Scientists propose that the sentinal Meerkat eats its meal before it stands as a guard and observer predators. In addition to this it observes for the predator by remaining close to its burrow so that it can escape very easily where as other Meerkat's might take time to escape as they are far away for hunting or eating food. Moreover when Sentinal Meerkat gives an Alarm other Meerkat's might gather together or run to their burrow which implies other Meerkat's are in more danger than Sentinal Meerkat and the lecturer does not classify it as an Altruistic behavior.
Secondly, the passage posits that human beings also show altruistic behavior when they share food, donate body organs to family members or even to strangers to which the lecturer contradicts this position by stating that the behavior presented above is not truly a selfless act because they are often rewarded not by materialistic things but by increased sense of worthiness. For instance, when a person donates his kidney, the donor is often praised by the society and the person who receives the kidney also appreciates his behavior which increases sense of worthiness.
