The reading and the lecture both discuss the theories of how agnostids, a kind of extincted marine animals, lived and behaved in the past. While the reading proposes three different theories, the professor casts doubts on the statements by claiming that they are untenable.
First of all, in contrast to the argument which states that the agnostids could be free-swimming predators that ate other smaller organisms, the professor asserts that free-swimming predators usually have large and well-developed eyes that can be used to track preys. She supports this point with the fact that the agnostids' eyes were tiny sometimes even blind, so they were less likely to be predators. Moreover, there is no strong evidence to support that the agnostids had other sensory systems to detect the smaller animals.
Furthermore, another theory introduced in the reading is that the agnostids were seafloor dwellers which are scavengers feeding on dead organisms or bacteria. The lecture, however, proposes a contradicting idea that seafloor dwellers do not move fast and far. Instead, they are localized at small geographic areas without moving to new areas. But the agnostids were found in multiple areas that are far enough, which suggests that the agnostids were able to move fast and travel long distance.
Finally, the professor claims that parasites are normally less in population due to the limitation of resources which challenges the standpoint made by the author who believes that the agnostids might be parasites. In addition, the professor points out that if the population of the parasites were large, as a result, they would kill their hosts. However, the large population of the agnostids rules out the possibility of being parasites.
