Both the passage and the lecture talk about the smart cars that will be driven by computers. The two contradictory views about the positive or negative ramifications of having smart cars are presented. The passage highlights the three major benefits stating that it will be safer, quicker and cheaper whereas the lecturer casts doubt on this by giving three reasons.
To begin with, technologically advanced devices fail occasionally. The cars are packed and tightly run with many cars piled up which leads to the worst accidents. However, this challenges the idea in the passage that smart cars will prevent accidents as it is controlled by the computers which are less likely to make mistakes than humans. In addition, these cars will be equipped with sensors and automatic programs that work effectively to avoid accidents.
Secondly, when convenience of driving is augmented, more people will be using smart cars which will add more traffic instead of solving traffic problems as stated by the passage. In such case, it will add no advantage to the people who commute by car and clearly contradicts the idea in the passage that increase in speed will lead to greater advantages for people commuting by car.
Furthermore, as smart cars use higher technologies like sensor, they will be more expensive. Moreover, their repairs will also be costly due to the advanced equipment used. Again, this refutes what is presented in the passage that car owners will have to repair them less often as these cars drive the most direct routes and the expensive items like brakes will last longer.
All in all, the chances of worst accidents, the addition of more traffic and increased costs are the major reasons presented for not considering the smart cars as cars providing more advantages in future.
