As seen in the passage, Agnostids were a group of marine animals that went extinct about 450 million years ago. Fossil remains of these animals does not provide requisite information about how the Agnostids behaved and their feeding habits. While the author provides some theories regarding what the Agnostrids ate or about their behavioral patterns and explains them giving reasons, the lecture puts into question the validity of these theories and puts forward explanations to validate their doubts.
First, the author avers that Agnostrids might have been free-swimming predators which preyed on smaller animals based on the fact that other types of primitive arthropods were good-swimmers and active-predators. The validity of this statement is doubted by the professor because free-swimming animals and predators required large eyes and sharp vision. But, the Agnostrids had very tiny eyes and poor vision, while, some others were even blind. If they were able to chase after prey, regardless of the fact that they had poor vision, then, they must have had some other sort of sense organ. But, the presence of other type of sense organ in their bodies is not supported by any fossil remains found till date.
Next, the author advocates the possibility that the Agnostrids must have been seafloor dwellers who survived by feeding on bacteria or as scavengers. In contrast to this point, the lecture states that seafloor dwellers usually had no ability to move fast or to very far distances. Therefore, they were found in localized areas rather than spreading across large distances. But, the evidences found from fossil remains of these animals shows that they had the ability to move fast and were spread across multiple geographic locations. Thus, the statement made in the passage about Agnostrids being seafloor dwellers is nullified by the fact presented in the lecture.
Lastly, in the passage, Agnostrids were assumed to be parasites that lived and fed on large organisms. But, the professor refutes this assumption by saying that the population of parasites living on a host must be limited as large populations can kill a host within a very short period. The fossilized remains of Agnostrids of a particular area are found to consist of large amount of fossilized individuals which in turn indicates that they were not parasites. Thus, the last theory put forward in the passage is also contradicted by the fact presented in the lecture.
