The issue both the reading and listening focus on is the possibility of establishing human life on Venus. While the author in the reading passage puts forth three main points indicating that there can be human presence on Venus, the listening assumes that the goal is to set up a floating station that is 50km from surface.
At the first point, the reading states that all the things that people may land on Venus are likely to be crashed due to the high atmospheric pressure on Mars, which is about 90 times greater than that on Earth. According to the listening, the atmospheric pressure is much lower when the station is 50 km far from the surface. Therefore, the pressure on Venus will be equal to that on Earth and there is no likelihood of properties being crushed by atmospheric pressure. This is a direct contradiction to what is indicated in the reading passage.
At the second point, the reading believes that there is no oxygen and water vapor on Venus. Therefore, they have to be transported from Earth to Venus which is extremely impractical. On the contrary, the listening argues that compounds like carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, which is easily obtained in Venus atmosphere, can be used to produce water. This is an important point that is not considered by the author of the reading passage.
At the last point, the reading mentions that the amount of sunlight can reach the surface is very little due to the thick cloud and carbon dioxide layer. Accordingly, the lack of sunlight will result in the shortage of electricity for human to settle on Venus. However, the listening confirms that on the station, the cloud is not thick and human are able to receive considerable amount of sunlight. In addition, they can make use of it by collecting both the direct and reflected sunlight. This is yet another example of how the professor and the author of the reading contradict one another.
