The reading and the lecture discuss a discovery about the remains of Tyrannosaurus rex which existed 70 million years ago. The author believes that this fossil could still contain tissues of the animal which have never been found because they have been replaced by minerals. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that it is doubtful that this fossil tissue’s remains could still survive.
First, the author comes up with the idea that the branching channels inside the fossil are likely to be a blood vessels compartments and that the soft substances which were found there may be the remains of the blood vessels. However, the professor argues that these substances could not necessarily be blood vessel’s remains because a kind of bacteria has been seen inside of empty areas in others ancient fossils. So, it might be just the moisture residue that bacteria left.
Second, the author states that the presence of spheres could be a great proof of the red blood cells’ remains, it is mentioned that iron material was contained inside the spheres which were a vital material to transport the oxygen to tissues. The lecturer rebuts this argument by pointing out that there have been ancient animals with identical spheres, but they, in their past lives, did not have red blood cells, therefore, the material remained in the sphere could be just reddish mineral.
Finally, the author contends that it was proved that the dinosaur leg bone contained collagen, which is always accompanying the bone tissue. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the collagen that has been found in other animals has been just from around 100 years ago, so it is not accurate to say that the collagen of this fossil has lasted for 70 million years. He thinks that the collagen drops from the researches’ skin because the skin, actually, contains lots of collagen.
