The reading and the listening both are about the enlarge marine mammals known as Steller's sea cow which were lived around bering iland off cost of siberia. The author provides three theories to explain the reasons of their extintion. However, The lecturer challanges the statement made by the writer. He is of the opinion that none of the theory is convincing.
First of all, the article notes that sea cows are hunted by the native people to fulfill their food demands in the harsh environment. The lecturer casts the doubt by mentioning that they were massive creature around ninteen meter long and ample amout of weight. Moreover, the population of the town was very small that time, so one sea cow was enough to serve them entire month. In that way, even they do hunting, but not too much to put them in danger.
Secondly, the author suggests that ecosystem disturbance was the other reason whic cause decline in the popuation. He describes that decrease in the kelp, which was the main source of food for sea cow and food shortage bring them to the elimination. On the other hand, the lecturer refuts the statement and point out that before 1741, there is record of disspearnce in the kelp, but, other marine species , for example, whales, who are dependent on this, had not vanished. So, it can not be the true reason behind their death because whales are still alive.
In the last, it is stated that eurpeon fur traders hunted this species and it is mentioned that last cow in 1768 was killed by the european dealers. Nonetheless, the speaker, rejects the point by asserting that the number of cows were already decreased before the arrival of European traders. He further elaborates this by saying that something was ongoing which cause the extinction of this species, that something could be the reason, but, not traders. In this way, he is not agreed with this theory.
