Keep a big picture in your mind: the lecture or discussion is like your essay writing, it has:

1. Introduction -- first 1-3 sentences. This is like your essay paragraph 1. By this you can understand what they are going to talk about.

2. Body 1 -- This is like your essay paragraph 2.

3. Body 2 -- This is like your essay paragraph 3.

4. Conclusion -- Last 2-3 sentences. This is like your essay paragraph 4.

Suggestions:

1. Try to figure out the main idea of the lecture which is in the introduction and conclusion.

2. Try to figure out the outlines of body 1 and body 2. For example, in body 1 the speaker will talk about the advantages while in body 2, the speaker will talk about the disadvantages.

3. Take notes if possible. Pay great attention to some connectors like 'what', 'where', 'how', 'why', 'but', 'however', 'in addition'. The content after them will be important.
