The passage discusses the climate of Alaska's North Slope and how it might have been inhospitable to its dwellers, specifically dinosaurs. In order to explain how dinosaurs residing in Alaska withstood the arctic climate of the winter, the article introduces a hypothesis. Based on this conjecture, edmontasaurs, one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs, migrated to areas with more suitable weather conditions during winters. The professor, however, refutes this migration hypothesis by providing several arguments against the reasons that the passage renders in favor of the hypothesis.
First, as stated in the article, the edmontasaur's dietary habits probably endorsed the migration hypothesis. Edmontasaurs chief food source was plants and because there wouldn't have been any plant growth in the winter, these dinosaurs would have had to move to survive. Nevertheless, the lecturer mentions that sun light adequately reached the North Slope in the summer and plants would have flourished. By the advent of winter, plants would have died and their remnants could be devoured by the edmontasaurs.
Second, the article provides evidence that edmontasaurs lived in herds and it is usual for herds of animals to migrate seasonally. However, as mentioned by the professor, animals live in herds for a plethora of reasons, not just migration. For instance, for safety and protection. An example of an animal that lived in herds and doesn't migrate, is the Roosevelt Elk, a plant eating animal that lives in the forests of the western US.
At last, the passage states that edmontasaurs were able to migrate long distances. Although it is true, but this only applies to adult dinosaurs and not the juvenile ones. If the juveniles joined the herd for migration they would have slowed the group down. The edmontasaurs couldn't have left the youngsters behind because they would have died. Hence, the adults had to stay with them in the North Slope.
