The article and the lecture are about the possibility to keep a permanent human presence on Venus which unlike on Mars or the Moon, seems to be unlike. The author in the passage believes that there are some negative conditions on Venus that make it inhospitable. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the statements made in the reading. She thinks that there practical solutions that help overcome these conditions.
First, the author claims that due to the atmospheric pressure is greater on Venus than on Earth, it is improbable to send humans to Venus which also implies that most of the spacecraft will crash to surface. Nevertheless, this claim is challenged by the lecturer who posits that the creation of a station above 50 kilometers of the Venus’ surface can be a practical solution because in this area the atmospheric pressure is as low as at Earth.
Second, the article states that the lack of water and oxygen on Venu’s atmosphere will make impossible to create settlements on it. Furthermore, the author exposes that this atmosphere is mainly made up of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid and the presence of water vapor is scattered. Nonetheless, the lecturer discredits this idea by explaining that due to the presence of these elements, it is possible to convert them into water and oxygen by chemical processes which clearly are easier than transporting eater and oxygen from the Earth.
Finally, the author mentions that because most of the sunlight is reflected in Venus by thin clouds, it is difficult to have access to electricity for powering space machines and equipment. The lecturer, on the other hand, puts forth the idea that the creation of the station on Venus can absorb the energy reflected from the surface and also the little amount of energy that reached into the surface can be used to collect energy for the equipment.
