Summarize the main points in the lecture, and then explain how they cast doubt on the ideas in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecturer are both about competition. The author of the reading believes that competition can increase motivation and productivity while students are having fun. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that someone who loses the competition is not having fun like those who win.
First of all, the author points out that competition was used a long time in classrooms to motivate and encourage students in their work as like athletes who improve their train with others who are equal or better than them. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that competition except providing competition and higher degree also increase cheating, fear of failure etc.
Secondly, the author contends that competition provides an environment in which students can increase their productivity. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says that competition does not increase productivity. He elaborates on this by mentioning that cooperation between students increase productivity.
Finally, the author states that competition is providing fun for students. The article establishes that teachers often use team-based competition, for instance, group quizzes, spelling bees, science projects etc. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that competition in groups is not fun because students who lose are not happy and that is not fun for them. He suggests a solution, students to compete against themselves by reading books.
