Benefits of learning new languages

Languages represent for individuality, therefore, immigrated children tend to learn bilingually, both in their mother tongue and in the languages of their new countries. This not only helps them to develop intellectual but also to conserve the language of their original country.

First of all, being bilingual has a significant impact on children’s brain. According to Houston Chronicle, learning another language at an early age help children to unravel obstacles effectively and think promptly leading to better performance than monolingual ones. The reason for this is juveniles have to go back and forth from one language and another when they study bilingually which make their brains process with great efficiency. As a result, they are able to focus easier and ignore distractions. ( Cuda- Kroen). Moreover, this skill boosts their memory to last longer since learning a language involves memorizing rules and vocabulary. Research shows that bilingual participants also responded more rapidly to conditions that placed greater demands on working memory. (E. Bialystok, 2001)

Second of all, learning a second language along with their native languages will have a hand in preventing their parent language from disappearing. For example, Inupiaq, an Alaska language, has only 1,500 speakers, is in the threat of extinction (Hopkins). Nevertheless, with the help of University of Alaska and computer programs, there is an increase in Inupiaq users, especially among the young generation. Thus, it is important for young people to maintain the beauty of their mother tongue through speaking and teaching others since “ a language dies every two weeks” ( National Geographic).

To sum up, the ability to speak two languages has many advantages such as cognitive development and language protection. If this trend continues, we will have a talented generation and no more languages have to on the verge of disappearance.
