The reading and the lecture are both about theories of the survival of Edmontosaurus in the winter. Whereas the author of the reading states that in order to survive they had to migrate in the south, the lecturer suggests that migration is not the reason that edmontosaurus survived. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First and foremost, according to the reading, Edmontosaurs fed themselves with plants which grow massively during the summer. So, in order to find food during the winter time they had to migrate in the warmer places. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that since the day is 24 hour in the summer, plants that die in the winter still have the necessary nutrients that they need. Furthermore, he mentions that eating these dead plants they can survive without any problem.
The second argument the author gives is that living in herds like many other migratory animals. It is a possibility that Edmountosarus easily migrated. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes the argument. He argues that it is true that like many other animals may have lived in herds, but this does not mean that they had to migrate. For example, elks lived in herds but they did not migrate. As a result, this point is not convincing.
Lastly, the text claims that the physical conditions may have allow edmontosaurus to seek for highly hospitable places. To make that journey they needed to move certain kilometers, which is not a problem for them. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that since they lived in herds, it is impossible for younger's to be able to walk a long distance. Consequently, adults would not live their juveniles behind. Therefore, they will stay together.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about the hypothesis of the survival of the edmontosaurs, the three points maid in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecture.
