Traditions are about the past and innovation is about the future, and it has been argued that we need to let go of traditions for the sake of progress. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this? What role should traditions have in our lives?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
There is no denying that, with the rapid growth of scientific innovations, there is a rising conflict between traditions of many people and these innovations. Some people believe that we should let go of few traditions to accept progress, while others believe that tradition is crucial part of a person's identity and people should not forget this. In this essay, I will discuss both sides and explain why I support the former.
On one hand, those who believe that tradition should be given highest priority might argue that this is part of a person's identity. This is because, cultures and traditions are part of a person's family history and it becomes an important connection of an individual to his family and community. For example, celebration of a traditional festival generally involves spending time with family members and relatives, which make people happy. If people stop following traditions, people might lose a vital connection with their loved ones.
On the other hand, I believe that in many cases traditions hinder progress and innovation in science. This is due to the reason that, there are some traditions which are very conservative and discourage people to help in scientific innovations. For example, some cultures do not allow donation of organs for research and exploration. These restrictions become hurdle in scientific research. If people start giving a precedence to tradition over research, it will be a great hurdle in progress of humanity. This means we might slow down various research projects like finding the cure for cancer, which is unacceptable.
In conclusion, I believe although tradition holds a special place in our lives and it should be given some importance, but it should never hold priority over scientific research.
