Venus conditions for human presence
The passage and the lecture are both about whether human can live on Venus. The author of the reading believes that planet's conditions are too harsh for human to survive. The lecturer refutes the statements made by the author. He is of the opinion that installing a permanent station for human shelter on Venus is challenging but possible. According to the lecturer, the stating will be flooding in the atmosphere like a balloon instead of being placed on the Venus's surface.
First of all, the author suggests that extremely high atmospheric pressure on Venus would crush spacecrafts and almost anything else. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that while the pressure at Venus's surface is high, that at the level in the air where the station will be located is similar to the normal pressure on Earth. Therefore, there will be no danger of crushing as mentioned in the reading.
Second, the writer contends that there is no supply of water and oxygen on Venus. The article notes that it is also impractical to bring those elements from Earth to the new planet. The lecturer, however, rebuts this point by asserting that these essential factors can be produced from chemical materials obtained directly from Venus' atmosphere. He elaborates on this by mentioning that in the planet's air exist compounds such as carbon dioxide and other gases, which can be treated through chemical process to make water and oxygen
Finally, it is stated in the passage that little sunlight is collected at Venus' surface to generate sufficient amount of solar power. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that dense clouds only appear in the atmosphere within 50 km from the surface. Above that level where the station will be positioned, the clouds are not so thick. Hence, more sunlight will be attained. Furthermore, he argues that since the solar power cells could take in both direct and indirect sunlight, the station can even use the sunlight reflected on from the cloud layers as well. Consequently, in fact more electricity will be generated to support human life.
