Building shelter forests
The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in the topic of the effectiveness in building shelter forests. To begin with, the reading says that building shelter forests can not only help prevent desertification and erosion, but also contribute to farming. However, the listening argues that it will not be effective to farming. It is true that it can help prevent desertification and erosion, but these trees will soak up the groundwater and this can cause problem to vegetations because they cannot absorb enough water supply. Moreover, evidences have shown that the level of groundwater is dropping after we start building shelter forests. Thus, building these trees will be harmful to farming.
In addition, while the reading indicates that building shelter forests can provide habitat for plants and animals to survive, the listening disagree with this idea. Researchers find out that the plants and animals live in the habitat create by shelter forests are uniformed., which means that only a few species can survive in this habitat. As a result, it cannot provide a suitable habitat for many species to survive. Besides, when there are lack of diversification, trees will be more susceptible to disease. Thus, the listening implies tat building shelter forests will not be effective.
Lastly, the reading asserts that building this can made people plant more trees and it can reduce the effects of global warming. Nevertheless, the listening is not convinced by this explanation. The majority of plants in the area where people build shelter forests, will still be low green plants, such as grass. These grass will not be helpful to global warming because they cannot absorb much carbon dioxide. Besides, these plants can retain heat and make the environment even warmer.
