The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about the health of the Salton Sea which is in danger owing to increasing the level of salt in that region. The reading passage claims that there are several solutions to decrease the level of salt in this area and reverse the past trend. On the other hand, the lecturer not only categorically casts doubt on every single point raised by the author through citing three different counter-arguments but also believes that none of the mentioned methods in the passage is realistic and practical enough.
To begin with, the author establishes that by exerting specific desalination equipment, the salt can be eliminated from the lake's water easily. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this notion, stating that it is true that this suggestion really reduces the level of salt in the lake; however, this idea engenders several problems as well. He continues mentioning that some solid materials which are considerably chemical toxic materials will remain after evaporation, therefore, this issue actually threatens the people's health in that area.
Furthermore, the reading passage brings up this idea that another theory is that by adding water from the ocean to that lake, the level of salt will be reduced. The lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the passage and states that this idea is completely true that adding ocean water will dilute the effect of salt in that lake; however, construction of new pipelines and channels are very expensive and the resources for doing this action is not definitely available right now.
Eventually, the reading passage goes on to mention that splitting the lake into different parts by building walls there can be a great solution in order to control the lake's salinity. On the contrary, the lecturer points out that this creative solution does not work in the long run due to several geological activities. For instance, if a catastrophic event such as an earthquake happened, all the walls would have collapsed, and moreover, the salty and non-salty water would be mixed. This solution is a great idea for a short while time.
