In the give set of materials, the reading and the lecture deal with The Salton sea to debate several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health. The reading passage is providing three pieces of materials to prove its point, whereas the lecturer argues against it by providing three compelling rebuttals.
The reading passage asserts the idea that one option is direct removal of salt from lake's water special desalination facilities. Water from the lake would be pumped into the facilities and heated. Gradually, the high salt levels would be reduced and the lakes's overall health would be restored. The professor casts doubt because desalination facilities can cause the toxic materials. And it also will contains other toxic material in left material after evaporation sequence in desalination facilities. these toxic material also can affect bad effects to people who live in near the facilities.
The reading passage claims that another possible solution is to dilute the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean. The ocean water could be delivered through pipelines or canals. The professor refutes the idea because construction of pipelines needs a lot of money. So local government is hard to pay for it because length of pipelines is about ten thousands kilometer, the cost of construction is too expensive. Thus, it is no realistic solution.
The reading passage points out that yet another solution would be to control the lake's salinity by constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections. In the main and largest section, salinity would be reduced and controlled by, among other things, directing all the freshwater from small rivers in the area to flow into that main section of the lake. The professor challenges the idea because it can be exposed by geological activities. For example, if earthquake is occurred near the lake, the walls can be destroyed. Through this corruption, water inside lake will be mixed again.
