Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
At present a matter of considerable controversy is the issue of whether including foreign language lessons at elementary school has a positive effect on learning or should children start studying that at secondary school. Strong arguments exist in support of both sides of this debate, which implies that these must be examined before reaching to any conclusion.
One of the most substantial arguments in its favour is that young children`s minds are more accessible to new material in comparison with an older age group, such as adolescents. This is generally because the information that is consumed by children takes place on subconscious level based on instincts.
Another positive aspect of an early introduction is that the greater flexibilty of the primary school timetable allows for more frequent and shorter lessons in order to avoid overstraining young pupils. In addition to that, a playful approach can be applied. Thus, maintaining learner`s enthusiam and progress. Therefore, it is clear why some people gravitate towards this idea.
However, there is another side of the question. Opponents of the primary approach, point out that, if primary language teaching is not standardised, secondary schools could be faced with an inequality of language levels. Hence, it could give birth to some difficulties. Consequently, after analysing this drawback it is obvious why many supports this claim.
In conclusion, taking into account everything mentioned above, I am inclined to believe that although the early introduction of foreign language has some downsides, it is more beneficial than harmful, primarly because it has more positive aspects that far outweigh the disadvantages. Ergo, the best course of action would be to support language learning in the elementary schools for prosperity of present and future generations.
