The reading states three ways to address the decline of Torreya, a type of evergreen tree that is at the brink of extinction. But the professor expresses his doubts regarding the success of the proposed methods.
The first method the reading suggests was to reestablish Torreya in the same location where it thrived for thousands of years i.e, Northern Florida. Northern Florida has a microclimate suitable for Torreya's growth. This microclimate is wetter and cooler than the surrounding region's relatively dry and warm climate. And the ongoing work by the scientists suggests that cool and damp areas are very suitable for the growth of Torreya. But the professor points out that it is unlikely that this plan would work. He states that the microclimate is getting drier and warmer by the day. This is due to increased global warming. A lot of wetlands have been drained out in the recent past. Hence, warm and dry microclimate may not foster the growth of Torreya.
The second option was to move Torreya into a new location, completely different from the previous one to help the Torreya thrive. The professor provides the example of black locust trees to disagree with the reading. He explains the proliferation of black locust trees in the new location and how that implicated in the destruction of several other plants and trees. These destroyed plants and trees were very close to extinction themselves. Hence, the professor states that this particular method could have unpredicted outcomes, which may or may not work in our favor.
The third option was to preserve Torreya in research centers by moving the seeds and saplings from the wild and preserving them in a closely monitored environment. The professor expresses his concerns regarding this. He talks about how in a non-biodiverse environment such as labs, it would be very hard for Torreya to resist diseases. But in a setting such as forests, they are more resilient due to the presence of huge biodiversity.
This way, the professor casts his doubts on the solutions provided by the reading to protect Torreya taxifolia.
