The charts illustrate the percentage of water usage for industrial, agricultural and domestic purposes in different parts of the world.
Overall, people used considerably more water for agriculture in the central and south-eastern parts of Asia, Africa and South America while the biggest portion of water usage was formed by industrial use in North America and Europe.
Turning to the details, in Central Asia, South East Asia and Africa, agricultural use accounted for almost the same percentage of total water usage, showing 88%, 81% and 84% respectively. In comparison, in South America, the largest share, 71%, was accounted for by agricultural use. The second largest portion was formed by domestic use in Central Asia, Africa and South America, being 7%, 9% and 19% respectively. In South East Asia, meanwhile, although people used 7% of water for domestic purposes as in Central Asia, it accounted for the smallest share after industrial use (12%).
Looking more closely to the figures of North America and Europe, it can be noticed that the percentage of water used for three purposes was nearly identical in these areas of the world. Industrial use accounted for about half of total water usage in North America and Europe. Domestic use was also the same, 13% for North America and 15% for Europe.
