The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The line graph shows the volume of water, which is measured in cubic kilometers, used all over the world for agriculture, industrial and domestic purposes in the 20th century, while the table illustrates the data of consumption of water in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 2000.
Overall, a major proportion of water was used in agriculture at any time in the given period, while domestic and industrial been the least consumer of water. In the case of the table, water consumption by Brazil is significantly higher than that of Congo.
Approximately 500 cubic kilometers of water was used in agriculture in 1900, which increased steadily over the time to reach somewhere near 3000 cubic kilometers at the end. Whereas, a negligible volume of water was consumed by industries and domestic needs at the beginning, but the proportion of water used for industries started to rise considerably after 1950 to reach over 1000 cubic kilometer in 2000, unlike the domestic purposes that had only a slight rise to reach a little below 500 km3 in 2000.
Brazil’s population(176 million), the total surface area of irrigated land(26,500 km2) and per capita water consumption(359m3) were more than thirty times higher than that of Congo which had only 5.2 million people with 8 cubic metres of water consumption per head and a mere total of 100km2 irrigated land.
