TPO30

The article introduces the topic of Roman's attack the Greek and the Greek defended themselves with an ingenious weapon called a burning mirror to set Romans' ships on fire. More specifically, the writer discusses that using a burning mirror in that time would be impossible and it is just a story. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. He casts doubt on the main points in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, the ancient Greeks did not have sufficient knowledge to invent this device. However, the lecturer disputes these points. He states that making a burning mirror is not a perplexing subject. He goes on to say that the Greek mathematicians might be able how to make this system by using some mirror pieces.
secondly, the author also claims that the burning mirror would have taken a long time to start a fire to ships and during that time the object had to be unmoving. Again, the lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer's argument. The speaker holds that building boats require some other materials, not just wood which leads a ship to the fire quickly even if a ship was moving.
Finally, the last reason why the author feels that making a burning mirror for ancient Greeks was not logical is that using flaming arrows to fire ships was common in that time which means the Greeks had no reason to make a burning mirror. On the other hand, the professor in the listening passage is doubtful that is accurate. He thinks that setting fire by a burning mirror was strange for Roman soldiers.

In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about making a burning mirror by ancient Greeks is reliable or not, the three main points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
