At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. it was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next 145 million years. we do not know exactly what happened that eliminated so many species in a relatively short period of time, but there are seveal possible explanations.
The lecture and the passage discuss the possibilities of the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period. The reading brings three possible explanations for that phenomenon. However, the professor in the lecture argues against those explanations and say that they cannot be logical reasons for the mass extinction.
First, the writer mentions that a sea level' decline eradicated the ocean population that lived in shallow water and distracted food chains. While the lecturer disagrees with this idea and points out that coastal and shallow water had an adaptation ability with fluctuation in the sea level. If that decline had occurred suddenly we could have expected such extinction. However, that decline in the sea level occurred quite gradual in several million years. Therefore, such widespread effects could not be related to the fluctuation of the sea level.
Second, the passage claims that climate cooling due to the released sulfur dioxide of volcanoes destroyed many species. Although the professor argues against that and believes that the sulfur dioxide could not stay in the atmosphere for a long time. The SO2 combines with water in the atmosphere and comes to the earth level by rain. This procedure doesn't take a long time and it could not affect the earth temperature significantly. Hence, climate cooling could not be a good reason for the mass extinction.
Finally, the reading expresses that displaced debris due to an asteroid strike thrown up to the atmosphere and blocked the sunlight. Whereas, the lecture retorts this notion and states that evidence does not reveal such a strike in that period. Such a strike had occurred twelve million years before the mass extinction. Consequently, this time interval between two occurrences is a logical reason to reject the possibility of the mass-extinction due to an asteroid strike.
Although the writer brings three possible explanations for mass-extinction, the lecture makes a reasonable argument against it to demonstrate they aren't the principal reason of the mass-extinction.
