The article states that the sea otter population start to declining a few years ago because of two reasons. Then she expresses that environmental pollution is the main reason for this declining and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that the main reason for sea otters population declining is the predation and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the existence of pollution sources along the Alaskan coast cause an increase in the level of chemicals in the water, so the otters cannot survive. The professor refutes this point by saying that pollution cannot result in otter's death because anyone has not been able to find a dead otter.
Second, the article points out that other sea mammals along the Alaskan coast were also declining, so water pollution is responsible for this phenomenon because only widely occurring predators like the orca, could have the same effect, but the orca prefers to hunt larger prays like whales. However, the professor says that whales disappear from the coast because humans hunt them. According to the professor, orcas have to change their diet and hunt other small animals like otters.
Third, the reading says that the uneven pattern of water pollution results in an irregular pattern of otter population declining in different locations. According to the professor, ocean currents and other environmental factors effects on the pattern of water pollution. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this uneven pattern even justifies the predation theory better. He says that because orcas have easier access to some part of the coast, the declining in otters in that part is more than the other parts. Large orcas cannot access to shallow or rocky parts of the coast.
