The graph below shows the average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
The line graph displays the amount of carbon dioxide emissions by each person in four different countries from 1967 to 2007. Units are measured in metric tonnes.
Overall, the quantity of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK and Sweden decreased dramatically over the period, while in Italy and Portugal they both increased.
Even though the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by each British dropped consistently from roughly 11 metric tonnes in 1967 to around 9 metric tonnes in 2007, it remained as the highest throughout the period. In Sweden, it started at almost 9 metric tonnes, then rose to a peak of just over 10 metric tonnes in 1977, before declining significantly to a low of just over 5 metric tonnes in 2007.
The Italians began the given period as the third highest contributor of carbon dioxide at approximately 4 metric tonnes but ended up as the second highest emitters of carbon dioxide with nearly 8 metric tonnes in the final year. Portuguese emits a negligible amount of carbon dioxide at just over 1 metric ton in 1967. However, the figure grew each year to around 5 metric tonnes in 1997, then subsequently remained stable until 2007.
