News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures.

some people say that these pictures are more effective than words.

what is your opinion about this?

It is cliché but true that a picture can say a thousand words. Before TV or print media, we had information from the radio, which was descriptive. Now that we can use photographs, it has become a lot easier to convey news or information to viewers. I agree to some extent that pictures can be very effective than text, but it depends on the subject matter.
It is very entertaining when we see pictures related to our favorite TV star or movie star in a newspaper. We scan their fashion, personal traits, and other things from television or newspaper. Pop culter can pick on that, or sports fan, for instance, enjoy watching reports on the recent matches.

Same is true for educational, such as historical events or knowledge-based information, can mean a lot when combined with pictures. People pay more attention to pictorial presentation than a verbal or written report. So, it makes sense to present information through images.

However, I am entirely against showing pictures of violence or crime. Criminal news or violent events draw a lot more audience than other news. So, broadcasting corporations sometimes allow more extended airtime for them. For better presentation, many news agencies these days show very graphic pictures of the crime scene. When young minds are exposed to such heinous crimes, it can be traumatic for them. Also, after watching that kind of news every day, one can be accustomed to that kind of violent behavior or worse, it can spread hate. That can have a severe negative impact on society. We should not adapt to seeing brutal pictures.

So, in the end, I want to be selective when stories are published through media when it comes to violence or crime. We should think about the impact on our kids before broadcasting bloody crime scene photos to increase viewership. Other than that, a picture can be an effective way to pass on information.
