Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
In the united state employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees wnat to work four-day week
The reading and the listening materials have a doubt on working period of employees in each week. The writer puts forward 3 main ideas which will refute by following speaker.
First, the writer claims that four-day workweek has benefit for companies. They spend less money (80%) for each person but obtain whole work in only 4 days. In addition, they will not face with error-prone works because their employees have enough rest and work alertly. The speaker views this issue from opposite angle. According to him, new worker needs new training, medical cares, official species and more computer. Furthermore having part time worker is costly.
From country and government perspective, taking new worker reduces unemployment in society by transferring some parts of work from full time worker to part time ones. On contrary, the speaker casts doubt on this assumption by saying that new worker forces additional cost for companies, so, their expectation raises and will want from their current personnel to work more. As a result, this causes no additional job and their worker feel high level of unpleasant.
Lastly, the writer proposes that four-day week work is suitable for worker because of enjoy more from being with their family and doing own activities. On the other hand, the speaker hold an opposite view. He asserts that workers will loose their work stability and management positions.
