Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him. One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the woman’s face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggest it could not be a work by Rembrandt.
First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects’ clothing, would not have been guilty of such an inconsistency.
Second, Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in this painting these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is the dark fur collar, which would absorb light rather than reflect it. So the face should appear partially in shadow-which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.
Finally, examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood.
For these reason the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt’s paintings in the 1930s.
The reading passage holds a view that a woman’s portrait is not Rembrandt’s, while the listening lecture argues that that was indeed one of Rembrandt’s works.
To begin with, the passage mentions that there is an inconsistency in the dressing of the woman. Rembrandt’s would never draw such inconsistency. This idea was fully rejected by the professor because the collar was added 100 years after the original one. The luxury collar was put on top of the original collar to show the woman as an aristocratic lady, thus, to increase the value of the painting.
The reading passage also attempts to convince us that the light and shadow in the painting do not cooperate well. Such a mistake would never be made by Rembrandt for he was a master of the use of light and shadow. This opinion has been casts doubts on immediately by the professor, who points out that the seemingly misuse of light and shadow is caused by the later added collar. In the original painting, the collar was of light colored cloth which perfectly suitable for reflecting the light from below her face to illuminate the woman’s face. That is the reason why her face does not appear partially in shadow.
Finally, the passage states that the work is painted on several pieces of wood glued together. Rembrandt has never known for painting on glued wood panels. Nevertheless, the professor clearly indicates that the original wooden panel was expanded when adding that collar. Several pieces of wood were glued onto the sides and top of the original one so as to make the painting seem grander and more valuable. Moreover, the professor further mentions that the wood from the original form comes from the same tree as the wood of another painting of Rembrandt.
