TPO-11 - Integrated Writing Task
A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature, novels, plays, and poems, than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself. While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Literature encourages us to exercise our imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. So by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits.
Unfortunately, missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. What are people reading instead? Consider the prevalence of self-help books on lists of best sellers. These are usually superficial poorly written, and intellectually undemanding. Additionally, instead of sitting down with a challenging novel, many persons are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page. Clearly, diverting time previously spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general.
The trend of reading less literature is all the more regrettable because it is taking place during a period when good literature is being written. There are many talented writers today, but theylack an audience. This fact is bound to lead publishers to invest less in literature and so support fewer serious writers. Thus, the writing as well as the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers
The reading and the lecture are both about the decline in reading literature books nowadays. The author of the reading believes that this decline had a negative impact on our culture. However, the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor in the lecture thinks that the decline didn't affect our culture negatively as reading literature books was replaced by other ways of expressing ideas like movies, music and the internet webpages.
First of all, the author points out that the decline in book reading in general and especially literature had people miss out on many benefits. It's mentioned that reading literature help people exercise their imagination and expand the understanding of language. It also increases the ability to empathize with others. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that books don't have to be literature to be intellectually stimulating and of high quality. For example, science and history books are as creative and well-written as novels and plays.
Secondly, the author contends that people today are more likely to read superficial, poorly written and intellectually undemanding self-help books. It's also stated that more time was diverted to watching television, listening to music and reading online webpages. This time was previously spent reading literature by people. The lecture rebuts this argument. The speaker suggests that watching movies and listening to music are as beneficial as reading literature. She also claims that contemporary art like movies and music are more successful in addressing contemporary concerns than literature.
Lastly, the author states that abandoning literature may have bad consequences not only for the readers but also for the writers. The article establishes that Although we have good writers today, they lack the deserved audience. Having less and less audience will make publishers less interested in supporting those good writers. As a result, this might lead to the decline of writing literature as well. The lecture, on the other hand, posits that modern literature is difficult to understand and even readers from the past would have difficulty understanding it.
