Some people believe that government funding of the arts is necessary to ensure that the arts can flourish and be available to all people. Others believe that government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts
The issue of government funding arts is quite controversial. On one hand Artists need capital, raw material and a medium (museums, concert hall, galleries etc.) to showcase or preserve their creations, which needs government funding .On the other hand government funding may influence the artists.
Art is memoire of culture or society and in todays past faced life we are losing our appreciation towards it. Arts are not looked upon as a profitable profession and in most cases an aspiring artist is unable to get enough recognition for his work. Art is also an integral part of our history, every civilization had artisans, craftsmen who for centuries had been passing their traits but now the outlooks grim as money involved especially in traditional handmade products has virtually disappeared. In these areas we certainly do require government funding and effective government policies. Government needs to fund muesuems, galleries, concert halls etc and also promote art among the masses. If there is enough support provided we will certainly see a resurrection.
On the other hand one might argue that government funding of arts will influence it in a negative manner.Even in a democratic society some sensitive topics might be surpressed or only certain areas will be highlighted.History also provides that politics and arts do mingle well for eg in Soviet Union artists, poets were told to glorify the government. Also we will require a fair and just advisory panel comprising of artists from various fields.
To conclude we can say that government funding is essential to preserve and promote art but strict policies, open discussions should be in set in place. Government needs to educate the masses about the importance of arts. This is a topic that should be approached cautiously.
