The reading and the lecture are about the decline of Torreta tyxifolia and the ways to address the problem. The author of the reading states that there are three ways in order to address the problem and provides the reasons of support. However, the lecturer states that the solutions won't be successful and refutes each of the author's support.
First of all, the author mentions that they can reestablish Torreya in the same location where it thrived for many years in an area which has a specific microclimate. This microclimate is wetter and cooler that will help the plant to survive. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She states that the area which has the microclimate has been affected and its temperature is affected by changes in temperature of the larger area. Furthermore, she mentions that this has resulted in the area becoming drier and unsuitable for Torreya's growth.
Secondly, the writer posits that the Torreya can be shifted to a different location, further north from Florida, where the climate is cooler. Also, since the plant has thrived in the past, relocating it to the same region could be helpful. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. According to her, the plant, Black locust, was moved to the same region far north and it created havoc to the surrounding region. She mentions that it spread quickly and damaged other plants and trees in the same region that were on the verge of extinction.
Finally, the author states that Torreya can be preserved in research centers. The reading suggests that it will be useful for the scientists to protect the species from dying as well as conducting research on it. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that in a research center, the population of the plant would be very less as compared to that in a jungle and the population won't be able to resist the diseases. The lecturer explains that in the jungle, there is a huge population of these trees that are genetically diverse and hence able to survive. But, inside a research center, without the diversity and without the large population, the species won't be able to survive.
