TOEFL T P O 14 - Integrated Writing Task

The article states that salvage logging is beneficial both to a damaged forest and to the economy. Although the professor tells that salvage logging may appear to recover the forest, its advantages do not last long and it will damage the forest in the long term. By the way, she refutes each of the author's reasons with the rational ground.

To commence with, the passage avers that this process will remove damaged trees, which will take years to decompose. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this point by stating that damaged trees will help the soil by riching that with a lot of chemical matters that they have in their stems and leaves. So, this process will lack the nutrients of the soils which are essential for their vegetations.

Second, the article claims that decaying wood is insects' dwellings and by removing it salvage logging helps minimize the dangers of insect infestation. Nevertheless, the professor contends that it is obvious that rotting wood is the dwelling of the insects but is this really bad for the forest? insects have lived in the woods for many years without any impressive damage and also the birds and other kinds of animals use these trees as a source of food. As you can see, salvage logging harms the forest more than insects and rotting woods.

At last, the reading declares that salvage logging has many economic benefits such as using the damaged woods and creating jobs. Nonetheless, the professor opposes this point by stating that these economic advantages are small and do not last long. By the way, the vehicles which are used for the process are too expensive. Besides, the created jobs are temporary and need experts from outside the regions. So, this process won't create jobs for local dwellers.
