The sustainability and preservation of archeological sites cannot be over-emphasized, what will become of these sites, if we continue to allow large number of tourist? In this essay, I will attempt to give my opinion, with reference to, if it is essential to try to sustain such places or to allow the public have access to them.
Tourism has contributed massively and immensely to the economic development of many countries globally. for instance, foreigners love to visit several African countries like Egypt to see sites such as the Egyptian pyramids, caves and much more.
Because of the sensitive nature of these sites, sustaining their standard and originality should be any government's top priority. Archeological sites, are generally used for research and educational purposes, so if value such places are altered, the results derived from them will be inaccurate. For example, we have several discoveries that had been made about dinosaurs, which would have been impossible if not for the maintenance of such sites.
Restricting the level of public accessibility to these sites and charging reasonable entry fees will also aid in preserving these sites. furthermore, the money derived from the fees, can also be used to cater for its administrative and operating expenses. It could also be used to upgrade certain aspects of such sites.
however, if restrictions on such sites are too rigid, the public may lose interest in visiting them. Also, if fees charged are too high, they may tag visiting such places as luxury.
In conclusion, the authorities must attempt to strike a balance between these two views, as both are mutually dependent. In addition, they should also carry the public along on activities they are planning on archeological sites, as this will give the people a sense of participation and involvement.
