The line graph compares the average carbon dioxide emissions by residents in four different European countries from 1967 to 2007.
It is clear that people in the UK emitted the most amount of carbon dioxide throughout the period shown. Also, while the emissions in the UK and Sweden showed a downward trend, the emissions in Italy and Portugal experienced a gradual rise. Overall, the gaps among these countries narrowed.
On the one hand, the emission in the UK fell steadily from almost 11 tons in 1967 to approximately 9 tons in 2007, although it remained the largest figure. As for Sweden, after a dramatic rise, from about 9 tons to over 10 tons by 1977, there was a sharper decline to less than 6 tons over the following thirty years.
By contrast, with regards to the volume of carbon dioxide emission per person in Italy, it was doubled from around 4 tons in 1967 to almost 8 tons in 2007. Similarly, there was a dramatic increase in Portugal, in 1967 people used to emit only 1 ton individually but in 2007 they emitted almost 6 tons per head. Interestingly, the emissions in Italy and Portugal overtook that of Sweden in 1987 and 2007 respectively.
