In some countries the differences in age between parents and children is generally greater than it was in the past. Do you think the advantages overweigh the disadvantages?
It is commonly acknowledged that the age gap between children and their parents is generally larger than it was in the past. In my opinion, although elder parents may have more experience, I would argue that the larger age gap can bring some problems.
One problem associated with greater age difference is that the parents tend to have less common topic and custom with their kids. Specifically, the enthusiasm of the senior parents to accept new gadgets is lower than the time when they are young. For example, currently, children are keen on knowing about smart devices like iPhone or IPAD, and they are also fond of chatting with others using social networking applications like Messenger. On the contrary, elder parents are used to calling with others and most of them have no enthusiasm to know about new technological gadgets. Children are unlikely to share ideas with their parents with these differences.
The slow pace to deal with things can be another critical problem. As is known to all, people’s physical stamina and mental vigor decrease with the increase of age. Hence older parents may take a large amount of time when they want to deal with the emergence issues. Consequently, the hesitation during the emergence situation such as earthquake and fire catastrophe will bring risks to their kids.
However, the experience of senior parents is the valuable assets for their kids in the future. The social experience and previous stories of the parents may play an important role for the children when they encounter serious problems in their daily life and study. The children will also become more confident with the support of seniors when they need to make difficult choice.
In conclusion, despite some possible experience merits of elder parents, I think the disadvantages of larger age gap will bring more serious communication problems and reacting delays.
