The passage gravitates towards the notion that by creating a team in the company for doing a particular task will bring multiple benefits by stating the advantages that comes along with the tactic. This idea is opposed by the professor by using an example of a survey of a company and providing the following reasons for the failure of the tactic.
Firstly, the passage says that by having multiple members working on a singular task would result in a quicker result. But the professor by referencing to the survey which was made in the last six months points out that the work was measured out to be slower than it should have normally taken. He states the reason behind it was that the team members conducted numerous meetings in order to come to a particular conclusion. Also the presence of multiple brains resulted into a chaos of different and non coherent ideas which made the process of coming to a conclusion that much slower.
The passage also says that the decision made by the group would be more creative because of being assigned as less risky by the protective shadow of the group. The professor talks against this by saying that the ideas were greatly puppet-ed by the influential people among the groups. These influential people used to ward off the ideas coming from other members of the team and used to sway the members into backing up the ideas brought forward by them. These influential people were also wrong a lot of times which could be verified by the outcome in the survey. Thus, such people restricted the creativity of the people who were not much influential but potentially had better ideas to do a particular task.
The extract says that forming a team would lead to a sense of achievement among all the members if they achieve something. The professor attacks this by saying that many free-riders made use of the success of the group without giving any substantial input that resulted in the outcome. The actual doers of the group were left dejected because of this unjust success awarded to the pedestrians of the team.
The professor used a survey from a company to prove that almost all the benefits of making a team to compete a task mentioned in the passage were phony and should not be used to strengthen the validity of the tactic.
