The time people devote in job leaves very little time for personal life. How widespread is the problem. What problem will this shortage of time causes.

The vast amount of time people devote in jobs leaving little time for personal life is a widespread problem and one that sparked heated debates. Many believe that this is a main cause of strain on relationships between friends and families. I believe that this shortage of personal time cause disputes in relationships especially with immediate family members. I will elaborate the problem along with their reasons throughout this essay.

The preponderant reason is the increase in unemployment rate and tough competition on jobs which make employees strive to increase output levels by working extra hours in the office. Employees feel obligated to put in extra long hours just to complete projects on time in order to meet their employer’s expectations or meet demands from customers. As a result, employees work longer hours, sacrificing their personal time and ignoring their personal lives. This in turn cause disputes among spouses, families and friends which might lead to losing these important relationships. For example, because of the immense pressure to quickly bring a product to market, employers will make the employees work on weekends and not providing for sufficient time to their families.

Secondly, increased standard of living, variations in lifestyles, project deadlines and competitive market can cause more stress for the employees. For instance, a recent study conducted by the University of California on software employees shows that out of 100 employees 88 people are suffering from stress management disorder. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of organizations and managers to provide space between personal lives and professional careers.

According to the arguments aforementioned, work life balance is essential for one to lead a life that is prosperous and contented. Further to this, policies that can help to achieve this balance should be made mandatory in organizations.
