The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about the use of glass in the modern architecture and its effect on birds. With this in mind, the passage states that since birds cannot distinguish the difference between glass and open area, they will fly right through them and will make themselves injured. The author provides three solutions for this problem. The lecturer, on the other hand, categorically refutes all the three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that none of them are effective in stopping the birds from injuring themselves.
First, both the text and the talk discuss the idea and the solution of using one-way glass instead of regular glass. In this line of thought, the passage explains that this kind of glass is transparent in one side and the birds cannot see the inside of the building, so prevent them from flying into it. Conversely, the lecturer asserts that the problem with using one-way glass is that it works like a mirror and reflect everything. To bird, this kind of reflection is as bad as regular glass, since birds do not understand the concept of mirror. To make things worse, if birds see the reflection of the sky and trees in the on-way glass, they will certainly fly into it and injure themselves.
Second, both the reading and the listening materials put forth the idea and solution of colorful design. In this vein, the author believes that the use of colorful lines and stripes can be effective both for the people using the building and the birds. However, the speaker opposes this solution, citing that although it is true that these colorful designs will provide opening for people inside the building, birds see those opening as an open hole. Consequently, they will fly through those hole and make damages. According to the speaker, if the unpainted areas of the glass become smaller, then this solution might be applicable. However, if they paint the majority of the glass, the room will be too dark for the people using them.
Eventually, both the passage and the lecture maintain the idea of the use magnetic field. While the author believes that the use of magnetic field will be efficacious for birds since they have the instinct ability to guide themselves, the lecturer refutes this notion. In this case, the lecturer believes that it is true that birds use magnetic field, but they use it only in long distances when for example they want to migrate from a cold environment in winter to a warmer climate. However, this notion does not hold true when the birds want to travel in short distances like traveling from one city to another. Indeed birds utilizes their eyes and brightness of light when traveling in short distance.
