The pie chart illustrates the percentage of women in United States, from various family structures, living in poverty during the year 2008. The pie chart compares rate of poverty that prevailed among different sexes and age groups.
It is evident that women faced far more financial constraints than men and by far the most affected group was single women with no dependent children.
The most financially secure population was married women with or without dependent children as only 8% and 12% of them lived under poverty line respectively. In contrast, single women with no dependent children alone comprised more than half of the poor population.
While women of all age groups were affected more by poverty than men of same age, just above 20% poverty-stricken women belonged to age group 18-24 and under 5. On the other hand, as the age increased, a steadily decreasing trend could be seen in men. While 20% of under 5 years faced financial difficulties, in those over 75 years these figures had dropped to less than 5%.
