TPO 13- Buying and selling fossils
The article states that fossils are increasingly sold to private commercials and that will cause many disadvantages to public and science, and give three reasons for support. however, the professor says that this issue is exaggerated and the advantages exceed bad effect of this trend and she refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the passage explains that private collectors won't allow the public to access and see fossils, so the interest to fossils by public will decline. The professor opposes this point by saying that the exposure of fossils will be great and more than usual because collectors will make it available for purchase and even school and library will see it.
Second, the article posits that scintest will missout discovery of new fossiles. The professor refutes this idea by explaining that in order to evaluate fossils and see if its valuable or not it must be examined by scintest first so the wont miss up anything.
Third, the article says that collectors have no experience how to deal with fossiles, in addition fossils will be damaged by lack of intrest of that people. however, the professor refutes this reason by saying that if there are no collectors present the other public institutions will not operate the process of discovery and many important information will be missed.
In conclusion, althought the reading and lecture is about fossils, the points made by the reading are effectively challanged by the lecturer.
