TPO 13- Private collectors have been selling and buying fossils, the petrified remains of ancient organisms, ever since the eighteenth century. In recent years, however, the sale of fossils, particularly of dinosaurs and other large vertebrates, has grown into a big business. Rare and important fossils are now being sold to private ownership for millions of dollars. This is an unfortunate development for both scientists and the general public.
Private collectors have been selling and buying fossils they have been doing this since the eighteen century. The passage views this practice in a negative way and the person disagrees with the passage for many reasons.
The reading states that the public will not have access to the fossils since they will be kept in collectors houses. The lecturer disagrees with this because often times the collectors sells the fossils and they sell the fossils to schools and other public entities which allow for more public access. These colectors also sell their collections at reasonable prices. Furthermore more people see the artifacts.
The passage states that these collectors often time prevent scientist from looking at these things. This is because private collectors outbid the universities and museums. And the reading says that scientists do not get a chance to ever look at the fossils. The person disagrees because in order for a fossil to have any value the specimen has to be properly identified and only scientist can accomplish this task. In doing so scientist have access to the fossil and they can study it as well. Finally the writer manifests that the private collectors often go to these sites and destroy the surrounding fossils because they are not careful in the collection process. The man says that having a large quantities of these artifacts is better than not having a large quantity of them. To conclude universities and museums do not go to many of the places to get the fossils.
