Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did, in fact, reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary’s claim.
The reading and the lecture are both about whether the adventurer Robert Peasry reached the North Pole or not. While the author of the reading provides three reasons to support the claim that Peary reached the pole, the lecturer opposes each of these reasons.
To begin with, the writer mentions that the National Geographic Society signed a committee to investigate the Peary's records he made and the tools he used. In the article, it is stated that the result of this investigation supports Peary's claim. The lecturer, however, rebuts this specific argument by mentioning that the committee decision was not an objective one. Moreover, she says that the members of this committee were friends of Peary, so their decision is biased.
Secondly, the author argues that the British explorer Tom Avery has made the same adventure of Peary with the same equipment and he reaches the pole in less than 37 days, which makes Peary's claims convenience. The lecture refutes this argument by stating that even if Avery used the same types of equipment, his experience is different in many ways. She states that Avery did not carry food with him as Peary did, so he had less weight to handle. Therefore, his speed is not good evidence to use as an indicator to support Peary's claim.
Lastly, the lecturer posits that the camera used by Peary was a primitive one. Therefore, its photographes could not be used to determine the position of the sun accurately.
