The bar chart depicts the percentage of family living in England and Wales with purchased accommodation or rented house in a 93 year period from 1918.
As can be seen from the chart, while renting houses was one of the most common ways in 1918, the trend of owning accommodation climbed during the time shown.
In 1918, the percentage of citizens in England and Wales rented accommodation was 78% which was nearly fourfold of the proportion of households owning a house. There was a slight decrease in the data of family in rented accommodation from 69% in 1939 to 59% in 1961. 41% was the number of residents possessed a place to live in 1961.
1971 saw a remarkable change in both figures when the percentage of two categories were exactly equal at 50%. In the following years, compared to the proportion of households in purchased accommodation reached a peak at nearly 70% in 2001 before falling to 63% in 2011, the equivalent figure of tenants went down substantially to 35% in 2011.
